An Open Letter from the Parish Priest J.B Nga of Thượng Ích

Dear valued benefactors near and far,

First and foremost, Father GB Nguyen Ngoc Nga, who is overseeing the THUONG ICH parish, would like to extend his greetings and best wishes for happiness and blessings to you and your families every day, through the intercession of Our Lady of La Vang, the patron saint of the THUONG ICH parish, and the Vietnamese martyrs.

Dear benefactors, A Christmas 2025 and Tet 2026 are approaching, stirring the hearts of people all over this planet, no matter where they live and work. During this end-of-year season, Vietnamese people, both non-Catholics and Catholics, especially those in the regions of Ha Tinh province, are having to bear the consequences of tropical storm No. 5 and No. 10 and severe flooding. These natural disasters have caused many rural and urban residents who are already suffering to become even more distressed and devastated.

Among those mentioned above, there is a very difficult and arduous situation for the people of the THUONG ICH parish and its neighboring areas (both non-Catholics and Catholics). There are many poor, elderly, lonely, and sick people who are eagerly waiting to receive gifts, as if they were a gift from the Christ Child, sent through the compassionate, united, and sharing hands of benefactors.

For this reason, Father GB Nguyen Ngoc Nga, who is in charge of this rural parish, would like to appeal to benefactors for some financial assistance for the people, both parishioners and non-Catholics, so that the THUONG ICH parish community can carry out its plan to distribute free gifts to the poor, sick, and unfortunate people mentioned above.

The first occasion is the planned distribution of Christmas 2025 gifts on December 22, 2025. The parish currently has a list and knows of approximately 600 poor, elderly, lonely, and terminally ill families in the parish and surrounding area who are anxiously waiting to receive a gift to warm their icy hearts during the freezing winter in this stony land of Ha Tinh province.

+/ Based on current prices, the presentation is as follows:

·       Each gift package is worth about 320,000 VND (three hundred and twenty thousand dong, equivalent to 12 US dollars, at the exchange rate of 1 USD = 26,500 dong), including Thai sticky rice, pork, and fish sauce, as follows:

·       Thai sticky rice, 1kg costs 45,000 VND, each gift package needs 2 kg = 90,000 VND (ninety thousand dong)

·       Pork costs 159,000 VND/1kg, each gift package needs 1 kg = 159,000 VND (one hundred and fifty-nine thousand dong)

·       The remaining amount is for fish sauce: 0.5 liters / 71,000 VND (seventy-one thousand dong)

+/ Please find the preliminary calculation as follows:
600 households X 320,000 VND/1 gift package = 192,000,000 VND (one hundred and ninety-two million dong), equivalent to 7,245 USD (seven thousand two hundred and forty-five US dollars, at the exchange rate of 1 USD = 26,500 Vietnamese dong)

+/ If benefactors are short of cash at this time, please help with 200 USD (two hundred US dollars, equivalent to 5 million 3 hundred thousand dong) to buy 16 gift packages for 16 households, one package per household, regardless of religion or belief.

+/ As for the hundreds of other poor, suffering, elderly, orphaned, lonely, and terminally ill households, the parish priest and the parish will appeal to the kindness of other benefactors for help to raise enough funds for the parish's Christmas 2025 gift distribution program to be realized, and for the poor, lonely, and sick people to have their hearts warmed to celebrate the great feast of the Nativity of the Lord.
